Healthy Aging
Nobody wants to be the person who completely loses independence when they get older
Who really wants help standing up from a chair, moving around, changing clothes or showering? Nobody
Almost everyone has or knows someone close to them who has suffered with these challenges. I know I have, and it is heartbreaking to see
While most people know this could be possible if they don't take control of their life and their health, many people still do nothing
I know 50 year olds who complain about chronic knee pain from basic things like climbing stairs of getting in or out of a car
I also know 75 year olds who can deadlift hundreds of pounds, golf 18 holes, go for long bike rides, and so much more with little or no pain
How is this the case for some people? Genetics? Luck? Possibly
What it ultimately comes down to is years, most likely even decades of either staying active and taking care of yourself, or neglecting yourself and kicking the can down the road
There is an old saying that always remains true; if you don't use it, you lose it
Many people don't use their body in the ways its made to
Here are some of the top ways you can make sure you:
Stay pain free
Add quality years to your life
Remain strong, mobile & active as you age
1. Strength Training
Strength training, also known as resistance training takes the crown as the #1 way to look and feel younger. Strength training does more for the body than any brace, medication, or steroid shot. To see noticeable results you should be aiming for a minimum of 2 strength workouts per week. Ideally 3-5x per week is best for sustained results and improvements
2. Daily cardio
Going for a short walk everyday doesn't seem like much. But this is like investing in the stock market. It's not about one investment that will make you rich. It is the consistent investments that compound over time. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise for heart health, bone density, cardiovascular endurance, stress, knee pain, and so much more. Make this apart of your daily routine
3. Active Lifestyle
Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for hikes instead of watching tv. Take family bike rides, participate in physically active hobbies like, pickleball, running, kayaking, or whatever else you enjoy. Compare a person who does these things throughout their whole life vs someone who does not. As they get older it will become very obvious who will struggle and deal with pain, and who will remain active and mobile. This is about making it part of who you are rather than just going through the motions
4. Good quality sleep
Sleeping is when our body heals itself. When we sleep, hormones become regulated, cells get repaired, our memories get stored, flushes out toxins, helps with energy levels, focus, and so much more. Proper sleep is very important for our bodies physically and mentally and we all know what it feels like when we don't sleep well. Make this a priority in your life
5. Balanced diet
Whole foods with ingredients our bodies need. Most people over indulge in carbs, sugar, and calories while severely under eating protein. Whether your goal is to build muscle, lose weight, become stronger, protein should be your main focus. This is because foods high in protein tend to be the most nutrient dense, and are lower in carbs and sugar. Aim to hit 0.8-1g protein per pound of bodyweight. You will look and feel better
Many people say they don't want to live to be old because they know someone living this way and they don't want to end up the same way. If you act and decide to own your health, wouldn't you want to live as long as possible while staying strong, mobile, and healthy to get the most out of life?
Everyone should want to live as long as possible with keeping their freedom and independence. Hopefully this post pushes you towards making healthy changes that will stick in your life
