The Worst Advice To Deal With Pain
If you have chronic pain (meaning you have been dealing with it for a long time)
The most obvious thing to do after you reach a boiling point is to go see your doctor
Whether its your shoulder, back, knee, or anywhere on your body...
If you have pain your doctor will tell you something along the lines of "Stop working out for a few weeks, relax until your pain goes away and take this pain medicine"
I know how frustrating this entire process is from experience
On paper this makes sense. To an experienced personal trainer who helps people overcome pain on a daily basis this is beyond frustrating
When it comes to strength, our bodies follow the simple motto "If you don't use it you lose it"
When you have chronic pain majority of the time there is a muscle or muscle group that is too weak to perform its job. When this happens our body resorts to what is called compensatory movement which can cause serious problems
This means other muscles are jumping in to help do the job other areas of your body aren't able to do how they normally should
If your knee hurts, it could be from limited hip mobility. If your back hurts, it can be from core instability. If you have shoulder pain, it can be due to a lack of thoracic spine rotation
If we take the advice from the doctor and relax by doing nothing, how is the root cause of your problem ever going to get fixed?
Here is the unfortunate truth. It won't get better. In fact, it is setting yourself up for the pain/injury to become worse in the future
If you have knee pain due to limited hip mobility, relaxing for a few weeks will do nothing to improve your hip internal or external rotation
If you have low back pain due to core instability, relaxing for a few weeks will not help your core become stronger to fix your problem
If you have shoulder pain due to limited thoracic spine mobility, relaxing for a few weeks will not improve your rotational ability
As you can see, taking doctors advice won't only not help you, it will make your problems even worse!
Movement is medicine
When in doubt if you are dealing with pain, move as much as possible and try to find ways that don't flare up your pain more
If you are sick, break a bone, or need surgery, go see your primary care doctor. If you are dealing with chronic pain, seek out a knowledgeable trainer or physical therapist.
