Why Your Pain Isn't Going Away
After training with clients for over 5 years, there are some very common trends that cause lots of people to feel stuck in their rehab journey.
If you have been dealing with pain for a long time and have been trying to correct it with little or no progress, this post is for you
1. Inconsistency
No matter what your goals are consistency is the first requirement. Want to lose weight? Want to build muscle? Want to get rid of your pain? All of these goals require consistency
2. Expecting fast results
Impatience is at an all time high. People want things fast in today's world. You've probably heard the cliche saying but it's true "Your pain didn't show up overnight, it's not going to go away overnight." Not only do you need to stay consistent, but you also need to be patient.
3. Doing the same exercises that aren't working
The human body is very resilient. Many cases of general pain can heal on their own, some require specific work to fix the problem. But if you're someone who's been doing the same exact routine for months on end without changing any variables like your frequency, volume that you train with, exercise selection or progressions, something needs to change.
4. Treating the symptoms instead of the root problem
If you only focus on where you feel pain you may never see the full picture. Many cases of knee pain come from restricted hip mobility. Lots of shoulder pain stems from the thoracic spine. And many cases of low back pain are due to a weak core. If you only focus on where you "feel" pain, you are only treating your problem on a surface level. Zoom out and get a bird's eye view to help you track down your problem.
5. Not pushing yourself hard enough
When it comes to rehabbing an injury most people are used to seeing pink dumbbells and light resistance bands. Majority of PT clinics don't even have anything heavier than 20lb dumbbells. Our bodies need to be pushed to make progress. If you are regularly lifting hundreds of pounds every day or week in the gym, there is a high chance 5lb dumbbells will only help your pain so much. Don't be afraid to push yourself IN A SMART WAY when necessary. I've seen plenty of clients get frustrated from not making the progress they expect even when doing the proper exercises, they are just simply going too light.
Lots of people have big egos. When they run into pain:
"it will just go away on its own"
"It's not that bad I can deal with it"
or "I'll fix it on my own"
These are the most common things I hear when frustrated clients call me for help. There is nothing wrong with needing guidance from an experienced professional on the problems you are dealing with.
If you're dealing with pain that won't go away or you can't seem to fix on your own,

Keep up the hard work
